LONDON -- Roberto Soldado extended his hot scoring streak at the start of his Tottenham career, getting his fourth goal in three games on Sunday to clinch a 1-0 victory over Swansea. Just as in last weekends Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, Soldado, who arrived from Valencia for 30 million euros ($40 million), was on target from the penalty spot against Swansea. The Spain striker, who also scored twice in the Europa League on Thursday, slotted past Michel Vorm in the 58th minute after Andros Townsend was fouled by Jonjo Shelvey. Soldados goals are softening the blow of losing Gareth Bale, who is on the verge of joining Real Madrid and hasnt played as the transfer has been negotiated. "Hopefully you can have more news in the next couple of days," manager Andre Villas-Boas said on Bales future. Even without last seasons top scorer, Tottenham, which finished fifth last season, has opened the new campaign with back-to-back wins for the first time in four years. Swansea, though, has lost both its matches, leaving the south Wales club with just 2 wins in 13 league games since winning the League Cup in February. From the start, though, Tottenham was the more powerful side, imposing itself on the visitors and controlling the midfield. Tottenham on Sunday was smarting from Brazil midfielder Willian being announced as a Chelsea recruit, having been on the verge of signing for the north London side from Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala last week. Tottenham is also pursuing Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches before the transfer window closes on Sept. 2, although Villas-Boas quipped: "Maybe somebody steals him as well." Yet, its been a successful few weeks in the transfer market, with Tottenham clearly spending the windfall exceeding $120 million it is set to receive for Bale. As well as Soldado making his first competitive appearance at White Hart Lane, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho also started for the first time at home. "These additions are really showing quality, plus they have brought to the team a new mentality -- we look sharper, we (have) a great will to win," Villas-Boas said. "We are able to run the game down, control the possession and get the result." Paulinho was a constant threat throughout a first half where the goalkeepers shone with their agility and saves -- particularly Vorm in the Swansea goal. He denied Paulinho after seven minutes after the Brazilian wrong-footed Jose Canas. At the other end, Hugo Lloris made a double-save to first thwart Wayne Routledge, and then Michu. Swansea nearly gifted Tottenham an opener. Ashley Williams headed against his own crossbar from Kyle Walkers cross while attempting to clear, and Paulinho followed up with a powerful strike that was saved by Vorm. And when Mousa Dembele struck from Walkers cutback, Vorm was alert to tip over -- as he was when Walker whipped in a dangerous cross. Tottenham reacted with anger before halftime when only a free kick -- not a penalty -- was given when Townsend was fouled by Shelvey in the area. But there was no mistake from referee Neil Swarbrick after the break when Townsends advance was blocked again by Shelvey. "He is really adding to our game because he brings that light and spark into our game," Villas-Boas said of Townsend. "He is a very explosive player." Tottenham, which failed to win a single penalty last season, has now been awarded two in two league games. And, once again, Soldado coolly slotted the ball into the net. Tottenham, though, eased off after finally taking the lead, and was put under intense pressure from Swansea. The hosts had Lloris to thank for protecting the three points by tipping over Chico Flores volley. Although Spurs are yet to score from open play in the league this season, they are showing they can cope without Bale.
. A groundswell for raising the number of playoff qualifiers to seven in each conference figures to get plenty of support from the 32 owners. Most notably, Arizonas Bill Bidwill, who saw his Cardinals go 10-6 and not get in, while Green Bay (8-7-1) qualified by winning the NFC North.
. Indeed, must be among the greatest challenges in all of sports. The pressure he applies, from set to set, game to game, point to point, shot to shot.

. The mood in Seattle was electrified as the parade featuring the NFL champions began near the Space Needle and made its way to CenturyLink Field, the home of the team. At a ceremony inside the stadium, the team thanked its loyal followers -- the 12th Man -- capping a day of boisterous celebration that drew an estimated 700,000 revelers to Seattle.MIAMI -- The postgame scene in the Washington Nationals clubhouse included a smoke machine, strobe lights and blaring music, which created an atmosphere akin to a South Beach nightclub. Following a woeful weekend, the Nationals had something to celebrate Monday. Jordan Zimmermann became the first starter to pitch seven innings this season for the Nationals, and they totalled 11 extra-base hits to beat the slumping Miami Marlins 9-2. The rout came after the Nationals were swept in a three-game series at Atlanta. "That was a tough weekend, but they responded," manager Matt Williams said. "They came out today and played hard." The Marlins endured their eighth loss in a row. "The only way we can get out of this thing is somebody needs to step up, go out there and say, Its over, Im done with it," manager Mike Redmond said. "We either need a big pitching performance or a big hit or a big play to spark us to get us going. Those guys understand that, and hopefully it will come Tuesday." Bryce Harper had two doubles and an RBI triple for Washington. He has batted .520 over his past seven games to boost his average to .348. Harper came out of the game as a precaution in seventh inning after he slipped running the bases. He said he has been nursing a sore thigh muscle. "It has been tight since Friday, but nothing too serious," Harper said. "Im ready to go Tuesday." Catcher Sandy Leon hit his first career home run, while Tyler Moore also homered and had an RBI single. Anthony Rendon drove in three runs with a double and a triple, and Danny Espinosa doubled and tripled. "It was a fun night," Moore said in the smoke-filled clubhouse. "We needed that after three tough losses in a row. Were just trying to turn the page. We swung the bats good, and Jordan pitched great." Zimmermann (1-0) bounced back from the shortest start of his career. After lasting only 1 2-3 innings when he gave up five runs against Miami last week, he lowered his ERA from 8.10 to 5.27, allowing two runs while striking out seven. "It was a lot better today," he said. "I was getting ahead with the fastball. When Im able to get ahead, I can throw everything elsee where I want and when I want.ddddddddddddWhen I fall behind, thats when I run into trouble." The right-hander gave up a homer to Garrett Jones but tied the Nationals record of 44 career victories set by Livan Hernandez. Zimmermann also had two of the Nationals season-high 16 hits. "A lot of guys on our team are swinging it well," Harper said. "Its contagious. Everybody is hitting it. It goes one through eight -- even one through nine." The Nationals improved to 4-0 this year against the Marlins and have outscored them 31-10. Washington started fast against Brad Hand after being swept in a three-game series at Atlanta last weekend. Jayson Werth missed a home run by inches when he doubled off the top of the wall with two out in the first, and Harper followed with an RBI single. Moore skipped a ball off the top of the wall into the Marlins bullpen for a homer in the second. Rendon hit a two-run double later in the inning to make it 4-0. Hand (0-1) fell to 1-11 in his career as a starter. He lasted only three innings while allowing five runs and five extra-base hits. Things are going so bad for the Marlins they brought in closer Steve Cishek trailing by seven runs in the ninth because he needed the work. It likely wont get any easier for the Marlins on Tuesday, when they face Stephen Strasburg. He beat them last week and began this week leading the NL in strikeouts. NOTES: Nationals RHP Doug Fister (back muscle) threw 50 pitches in a bullpen session and said he felt good afterward. The next step for him is a simulated game. ... Nationals OF Nate McLouth missed his second start in a row because of a sore left knee. ... With a left-hander pitching for Miami, 1B Adam LaRoche sat out for the first time this season. ... Marlins OF Marcell Ozuna was held out of the starting lineup after bruising his foot when he fouled a ball off it Sunday. ... INF Rafael Furcal (hamstring) began a rehabilitation assignment Monday that is expected to last three weeks, meaning he wont join the Marlins until early May. ... Marlins 1B Garrett Jones is a fan of pro wrestling, and his new theme song when he bats is a tune used by The Ultimate Warrior, who died last week. ' ' '
